Nicki Minaj - Super Freaky Girl

September 04, 2022

Nicki Minaj releases music video for new single 'Super Freaky Girl', based on Rick James' 1981 classic 'Super Freak'

The technicolor video, directed by Joseph Kahn, sees Nicki Minaj transform into her own version of Barbie and play with her Ken, actor Alexander Ludwig ("Hunger Games," "Vikings").

At home, dominated by shades of pink, the pair indulge in provocative poses, with Nicki Minaj rapping on the chorus from a kitchen counter while holding a knife, while Alexander Ludwig fondles her feet.

The couple's perfectly plastic happiness, however, is turned upside down when Ludwig starts hitting their neighbors in the street with his magenta sports car.

Nicki Minaj then sets him on fire with a bright pink blowtorch as he leaves for work and the house goes up in flames as the happy couple host a barbecue for two in the backyard.

The video for 'Super Freaky Girl' comes just days after Nicki Minaj performed at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards. The hip-hop star was one of the evening's hosts, singing her biggest hits and being awarded the iconic Video Vanguard Award of the event.

"Super Freaky Girl" is Nicki Minaj's first solo song to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and her third song overall following "Trollz" featuring 6ix9ine and "Say So" featuring Doja Cat, both of which dominated the chart in 2020.

Nicki Minaj also became with 'Super Freaky Girl' the first solo female rapper to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 since 1998 – since Lauryn Hill's 'Doo Wop (That Thing)'.

"Super Freaky Girl" follows up a busy year for the hip-hop star.

Nicki Minaj returned to her discography earlier this year with the singles 'Do We Have A Problem?' and 'Bussin' featuring Lil Baby and 'We Go Up' featuring Fivio Foreign, while also meeting Coi Leray on 'Blick Blick'.
