Jason Derulo, the chart-topping singer behind hits like "Savage Love", has shared the harrowing story of how he came dangerously close to death after breaking his neck in a horrific accident in 2013. The incident forced him to cancel his Future History World Tour, leaving him questioning whether his life had just ended.
The Life-Threatening Fall
Speaking on the Great Company Podcast, the now 35-year-old artist recalled the moment he fell while practicing backflips for stamina during rehearsals for his tour.
"I was preparing for my tour and working on these back tucks for stamina," Derulo explained.
"We were doing back-to-backs—20 in a row. I slipped on one, and I bailed. You're never supposed to bail, even if you slip. You're supposed to keep going. I bailed, fell on my head, and I heard a crack."
The chilling sound of the crack and the heat he felt in his neck immediately set off alarm bells for the singer. "I was just like, 'Oh s*!' I felt a huge heat in my neck and thought, 'Did my life just end?'"**
The Painful Aftermath
After the fall, Derulo was rushed to the hospital by his mother. Despite being in excruciating pain, he didn’t want to worry her.
"I'm sitting in the passenger side, and every single bump my mum hit on the road felt like hell on earth," he recalled. "I've never felt so many bumps in my life."
The injury involved a fractured vertebra, which could have been fatal or resulted in permanent paralysis. Fortunately, Derulo managed to recover after extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation.
The Impact on His Career and Life
The accident marked a turning point for Derulo, forcing him to take a step back from his high-energy performances and grueling tour schedule. Though the global tour had to be canceled, he eventually made a full recovery and returned stronger than ever to the stage, cementing his status as one of pop music's most dynamic performers.
A Reminder of Life’s Fragility
Derulo’s experience serves as a sobering reminder of the risks involved in high-energy performances and the resilience required to overcome such life-altering events. His story is not just one of survival but also of perseverance, as he continues to inspire fans worldwide with his music and dedication to his craft.
