Elton John: Britney Spears 'needed some love in her life'

Elton John had only good things to say about his collaboration with Britney Spears on the new single 'Hold Me Closer'.

"I'm really happy for Britney, especially because the fact that she's on this song is really nice," he said in an interview Thursday, Sept. 1, with Zane Lowe and Apple Music.

“But she's somebody who's been through hell, who needed a little love in her life, a lot of love from a lot of people, and she's getting it. And she hadn't really made music since 2016, so for me it's all about her," Elton John continued.

“Life moves at an incredible speed and I don't know what's going to happen, but I'm so excited that this is happening because I love this song. I love the fact that it's “Tiny Dancer” because it's one of my favorite songs. I'm a lucky man. Listen, what can I say? The song has taken off," he said.

"I'm 75 years old and I'm having the best time of my life and it turns out you can be modern and old at the same time if you care enough to be interested in what's going on," he said.

However, Elton John revealed that Britney Spears was nervous about returning to the recording studio for the first time in more than half a decade, but arranged for the singer to meet with producer Andrew Watt at a Los Angeles studio and wait for the result.

“He did it so well and so easily. And I'm sure a lot of people thought, "Can she still sing?" Well, I knew he could sing, because if you go back and look at the old stuff, he was the biggest artist in the world and he could sing, he could dance, he could do everything. So I wasn't worried about that," he continued.

"What I was worried about was if she'd be too stressed out because she's had a long time to do it, but she's done really well," he added.

And while Elton John revealed they still haven't spoken privately since 'Hold Me Closer' was released, Britney Spears sent him a gift.

"It hasn't been on the charts for a long time, but it's warming up, thawing out, as I say, and having a great time," he said.

“And I don't know when I'll see her or talk to her again, but it doesn't matter. The more the song does, the more it will help her heal. And she will realize that people love her so much and that they have missed her. They sympathize with her," he noted.

Elton John is used to working with younger artists, but he explained why Britney Spears' case was different.

"Well, usually, you know, I work with newer people that I really want to work with, like Yard Act and Rina Sawayama and new people in it, Surfaces, Olly Alexander, the list is endless," he commented.

“So I haven't really worked with someone like Britney in a long time. I'm focusing on doing something with someone new, SG Lewis. I like working with new people," he continued.

“So working with someone who has their own reputation and success is a challenge for me as well, because you want it to come out just right. And that's how it happened. Sometimes that doesn't happen, sometimes the magic doesn't happen and she put her fairy dust in the song and the magic happened," admitted Elton John.
