"Lyrics are never mean," Drake asserted.
Drake admitted on a recent podcast with Lil Yachty that he regrets mentioning the names of his former bandmates in several of his songs.
The rapper made the statement on the first episode of his colleague Lil Yachty's brand FUTUREMOOD podcast, "A Moody Conversation," which was released recently.
During one point in the discussion, Drake stated that he has taken issue with using the names of his former relationships in his songs.
"Sometimes when I say girls' names in songs, maybe those are the two things I remember and I think, 'Maybe I could have done that without ... insulting people about their age or upsetting someone's life,'" she said.
"The lyrics are never meant to be bad, but someone once said to me, 'You know, it's not necessarily what you're saying about me, it's the fact that you said it,'" he later clarified.
Drake also added that one of his ex-partners didn't hesitate to reveal to him in a conversation they had about him using her name in one of his songs that it affected her personal life, as she "had to get her things back together." pieces of her' that she had tried to collect after her breakup with the rapper.
“You don't know who my partner is at the time or you don't know what my family knows or doesn't know. And if you express any form of displeasure at me and mention me by name in a song, then suddenly I'm left to pick up the pieces of my own life that I tried to build on my own," were the words his ex-partner told him.
Drake closed the matter by telling Lil Yachty, "Since then I've tried every way to stop doing that, but I like to be honest in music too."
In the same conversation, Drake spoke at length about making a "dignified exit" from music.
