Tom Odell - Monster v.2

April 03, 2021

BRIT Award-winning Ivor Novello songwriter and platinum artist Tom Odell presents the new single "monster v.2".

After a difficult period with his mental health that lasted all of 2018 and almost all of 2019, Tom Odell managed to escape by writing new music, putting all his emotions into these new songs that will be included on his fourth album entitled "Monsters", which will be released on June 25 by Columbia Records / Sony Music.

His rebirth and potential are evident in this work.

The first single from the album was "numb". After releasing an audio version of "monster", the album's title track, Tom Odell releases the original version as "monster v.2", which is full of synthesizers and electro beats

The new single continues the "numb" melancholy and the chorus of "you're just a monster and I'm not afraid" was originally inspired by activist Greta Thunberg's speech against Donald Trump at the 2019 UN Climate Change Summit. Then Tom Odell developed the chorus and finally refers to his ongoing battle with anxiety.

The music video of "monster v.2." consists of smaller videos in which the singer's fans express what the word "monster" means to them.

Tom Odell said: "In 2019 my stress increased and I had to stop making music for a while. There was a time when I felt like I could not leave home without a panic attack. I wrote "Monster" trying to overcome my battle with health problems. "The more I talked about it, the more I realized that a lot of people go through the same thing."

"I asked the fans to show me what the word 'monster' means to them and I thought of making a 30 second video for Instagram or something like that, but the first time I put all the clips together, I cried. It was so moving to see all these people being so vulnerable. So I deleted all the rest of the video I made for the song and ended up with this music video, as it was very good. "I think it is one of the most dynamic videos I have made," he described.

Tom Odell recently introduced the "monster" for the first time in an acoustic appearance on "The Graham Norton Show".

Tom Odell has been working as a musician since the age of 21 and his first album, "Long Way Down", was released at No. 1 of the British charts. He has since garnered over 2.6 billion streams, has three albums topped the UK Top 5 and two singles to appear in the Top 10, a Critic's Choice Award at the 2013 BRIT Awards and has also been awarded the important Ivor Novello Award as "Singer of the Year".

Now, at the age of 30, it is clear to Tom Odell that the noise he made with his debut started nicely but eventually became an obsession. It peaked in September 2019, when shortly after the "Jubilee Road" tour, he went to Los Angeles to begin recording his next album.

"All this stress I had for years, that time got worse and I woke up one day and I couldn't write any more music," reveals Tom Odell.

He knew something had to change. In the end he returned to his country and went to his parents' house and slowly improved.

Slowly but surely, Tom Odell transferred this experience to the new album. He also realized that the lyrics he had in mind had to match his music, so many of the songs on the album were created with songwriter Laurie Blundell and producer Miles James.

So it led to electronic and bedroom pop sound, which he has been obsessed with in recent years. This new love for electro pop came with the arrival of the pandemic and the songs were created in a more natural way. It was a move made out of his desire to explore a new way of recording. And while his new music is a little more melancholy and heavier, there is always a happy touch, which means he is always able to make great pop, hiding his sadness in melodies.

In this strange time, his new songs represent the beginning of the second chapter in Tom Odell's musical journey.
