SZA open to creating a joint album with Kendrick Lamar

SZA has expressed her enthusiasm for collaborating on a full album with Kendrick Lamar, calling the idea "amazing" and praising the rapper’s artistic genius.

The Saturn singer and the hip-hop icon have worked together on several standout tracks over the years, including 2017’s Doves in the Wind, 2018’s All the Stars, and 30 For 30 from the reissue of SZA’s SOS album. Their collaborations also extend to Kendrick’s latest LP, GNX, which features Luther and Gloria.

Speaking on Sherri on Wednesday (January 8, 2025), SZA—real name Solána Rowe—opened up about her admiration for the HUMBLE hitmaker and the possibility of a joint project. “I would love that,” she said. “I think that would be amazing. He’s such a genius. A part of his genius is being so elusive and mysterious, and I love it.”

When working on GNX, SZA admitted she wasn’t always sure where her contributions would land but trusted the process. “I don’t know what’s going on as much as you don’t know what’s going on,” she shared. “When Luther came out, I said, ‘OK, that’s the vocals we’re using, period.’ Same with Gloria. I said, ‘OK.’”

At 35, SZA acknowledged that working with Kendrick, 37, often puts her “in the spotlight,” but she credited him for staying grounded and inspiring her creative journey.

“He’s a huge part of my fumbling and finding era,” she continued. “I’m trusting his expertise and being thrust into these moments and the spotlight, saying yes. He’s so good at saying yes but staying grounded. So I’m just like, ‘Teach me, sensei, what you know.’”

Fans of the two artists can look forward to seeing them together on the Grand National Tour, which kicks off in North America this April.
