Sony Walkman returns as hi-res streaming player

The new Sony Walkman connects to streaming apps and has an Android operating system.

The iconic Sony Walkman is set to return as a high-resolution streaming player.

The Sony Walkman was first released in 1979 and sold over 500,000 in its first year. It was a giant leap forward in mobile music listening and has sold over 400 million to date across all formats.

Now, with cassette sales set to increase in the US in 2022, the Sony Walkman is making a comeback as a hi-res streaming player.

Sony says the new Walkman, which will be available in two models called the NW-ZX707 and NW-A306, offers "evolutionary sound" and allows listeners to download music to the device or stream over Wi-Fi.

Sony adds that you can also use "your favorite streaming and music apps directly on your Walkman, or connect to a computer to access your music collection."

The product description notes: “The evolving algorithm now offers even greater benefits for CD-quality (16-bit 44.1/48kHz) lossless audio. The reconstruction of acoustic details and dynamic range provides a richer and fuller listening experience."

The description of the video introducing the new Sony Walkman reads: "Enjoy your music as the artist intended, wherever you are, with the amazing sound quality of the NW-ZX700 series, which inherits the philosophy of the Signature Walkman®" .

"With improved battery life, a larger 5" screen, easy download and streaming functions, it's also portable and stylish for the most demanding music lover," it added.

The NW-ZX700 Sony Walkman model features an Android operating system, 64GB of internal memory (with 47GB of actual available size), and WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity. The battery of the device supports 21-25 hours of continuous music playback.

In 2019, Sony released a retro Walkman to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the device's debut.

The company said at the time: “Take a trip down memory lane with the 40th anniversary edition. It wasn't all better back then, so you can enjoy the best of both worlds with the traditional Walkman design while having cutting-edge technology at your fingertips."
