Selena Gomez is back on Instagram after four years

Selena Gomez had deleted the app from her phone and handed over her password to her team, who posted on her behalf.
Selena Gomez is back on Instagram after four years.

The pop star, who was the second-most-followed woman on Instagram when she stopped using the social media herself more than four years ago, made a quiet comeback on Wednesday (January 11) with a low-key series of selfies in a bathroom.

“Wait, can you tell I'm back on Instagram?” Selena Gomez wrote in her message.

“I've been online for four and a half years,” the singer and actress said on “Good Morning America” in April 2022. “It's completely changed my life. I'm happier, I'm more present, I connect more with people," she emphasized.

A year ago, Selena Gomez also opened up to InStyle about her troubled relationship with social media and Instagram, where she now has 369 million followers.

“I realized that my little world is complicated, but the picture is much bigger than the things I deal with. I have depression and anxiety issues and it was hard for me to be myself," she told the magazine at the time.

“I didn't want to post anything on social media because I realized I was in a situation where I was extremely blessed. What could I post or say?” he added.

So Selena Gomez deleted Instagram from her phone and handed over the keys (or rather the passwords) to a member of her team after realizing she had an unhealthy relationship with both the app and other social media.

"At some point Instagram became my whole world and it was really dangerous," he admitted.

“In my early twenties, I felt like I wasn't pretty enough. There was a whole period in my life where I thought I needed makeup and I never wanted to be seen without it," explained the pop star, who has been open about her struggles with bipolar disorder and anxiety.

It's unclear exactly when Selena Gomez started using her Instagram account herself again, but her recent posts include several snaps from her New Year's vacation in Mexico and several photos with 9-year-old sister Gracie Elliott Teefey.

“The older I got, the more I developed and realized that I had to take control of my emotions. I wanted to be able to look in the mirror and feel confident to be who I am,” Selena Gomez also told InStyle in January 2022.

"Taking a break from social media was the best decision I've ever made for my mental health," she said.

“I created a system where I still don't have my passwords. And the unnecessary hate and comparisons disappeared as soon as I put my phone down. There are times when that weird feeling comes back, but now I have a much better relationship with myself,” she said.
