Sam Smith Prepares First Album That 'Won't Be Heartbreaking'

"I had a chance to sit down and really ask myself what music I want to make," says Sam Smith.
Sam Smith is gearing up to release his truest album yet, and he credits it to coming out as non-binary in 2019.

In an interview with the new issue of Billboard, Sam Smith stated that since being able to embrace his true self, unbound by gender expectations, he has liberated himself emotionally and mentally.

"I can't express how incredible I feel every day," she noted.

The public got their first taste of new songs from Sam Smith with the single 'Love Me More' which was released last April.

"Love Me More," according to Sam Sam, is the anthem of his efforts to "not hate himself" and discover his self-worth.

“I think joy for me, and for a lot of queer people, is a pretty dangerous place. We're all experts in pain, and I think it's really a very brave thing to step into the queer joy of all these things,” she explained.

Although Sam Smith is "not going to reveal" the titles of his new songs, emphasizing that the next album is still in the production process, he did share some details about its tone.

Billboard described the demos it heard as "celebratory" with "dance-pop touches" and "choral expressions of jubilation", a change from Sam Smith's previous "heartbreaking" songs.

"Maybe the music I'll make in the future won't fit so well on the radio. It takes a little bit of courage to maybe try something that people might not like," said the British singer.

"But I like it. And that's all that matters," he added.

"This album, for me, marks the beginning of me doing exactly what I want to do," he continued, adding that his new record will be his "first album that isn't heartbreaking."

Sam Smith has argued that his new album is also a result of his quest over the past three years to discover who he is.

“It was really a moment when I became more mature. I was turning 30, we got through COVID-19 and I had a chance to sit down and really ask myself what is it that I want to do and what kind of music do I want to make,” he said.

Sam Smith also revealed that he was more involved in the production of this album compared to previous works. their.

"For the first time I think in my career, I actually walked into the room and said, 'I want to learn how to produce more.' I want to make more adjustments to the vocals than I have done. I want to be more involved in everything," he described.

"Obviously, I've been involved in everything since the beginning, but now I've just evolved a little bit," he continued.

The title and release date of Sam Smith's next album after 2020's 'Love Goes' is currently unknown.
