Robbie Williams thinks Taylor Swift didn’t know who he was during their collaboration

Robbie Williams has shared an amusing anecdote about performing with Taylor Swift and his belief that she might not have known who he was at the time.

The Angels singer recalled the moment he joined Taylor on stage at Wembley Stadium during her Reputation tour in 2018. The 50-year-old made a one-off appearance to perform with her in front of a packed audience, but he’s now revealed he suspects Taylor was unfamiliar with his work.

In an interview with SiriusXM Hits 1 to promote his upcoming biopic, Better Man, Robbie suggested that Taylor’s then-boyfriend, English actor Joe Alwyn, might have been the one to influence her decision to invite him. "When I came up through the stage and the audience erupted, you could just see this thing in her face go, ‘Uh? Eh?’" he said, recounting the moment with a laugh.

He added, "I’m like, ‘Yeah, yeah, I’m the mayor of this here. I’m a big deal.’" However, Robbie speculated that Taylor only had a vague awareness of him. "I think Taylor knew the concept of a Robbie Williams somewhere in the world, but I don’t think she really knew much about me. I reckon her boyfriend at the time said, ‘Hey, maybe you should get Robbie Williams,’ and that’s probably how it all happened."

Robbie also touched on his upcoming biopic, where he is portrayed by a chimpanzee, with the character using his own voice. He explained that the unusual choice stems from how he used to describe himself early in his career. "I referred to myself as a ‘performing monkey,’ so it made sense to take that literally," he said.
