The new law, Senate Bill 8, prohibits abortion of a fetus once heart activity can be detected, which usually occurs around six weeks before most women find out they are pregnant.
The law makes no exceptions for victims of rape or incest and allows citizens to sue abortion clinics or anyone involved in facilitating an abortion.
The U.S. Supreme Court refused to block the bill before it passed it last Wednesday (September 1st), leaving Texas, according to the New York Times, as the U.S. state with the most restrictions on access to abortion services.
