OneRepublic owes 'I Ain't Worried' to Tom Cruise

"I wasn't trying to write a huge world song," comments OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder about "I Ain't Worried."
OneRepublic's 'Top Gun: Maverick' single 'I Ain't Worried' is a worldwide hit, and the band says it owes the song's existence to the film's star, Tom Cruise.

In an interview with Billboard, OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder recalled watching a rough edit of the film's scene where the leads were playing soccer on a beach, and Tom Cruise asked him, "What are you listening to?"

"I said, 'I'm listening to a little bit of Beach Boys, a little bit of Gorillaz... and that whistle,'" Ryan Tedder replied, and began working with OneRepublic's Brent Kutzle to create a song based on that whistle.

"I Ain't Worried" was included on the soundtrack of the movie "Top Gun: Maverick", which was released in May and continues to climb the charts around the world.

The song has amassed 255 million streams worldwide to date and has been featured on playlists such as Spotify's Today's Top Hits, Apple Music's Today's Hits and Amazon Music's All Hits.

"I Ain't Worried" got an even bigger boost thanks to the power of TikTok, with the birth of the "Rooster Wiggle" trend, which parodies a scene from the movie where Miles Teller wanders shirtless on the beach while the OneRepublic song plays.

'Rooster Wiggle' has now become one of the top trends on TikTok, amassing over 1.5 billion views, which has been a boon for 'I Ain't Worried'.

But, if Tom Cruise hadn't asked Ryan Tedder to really listen to the sounds that were in that beach scene, "I Ain't Worried" wouldn't have been born.

“The beauty of it was that I wasn't trying to write a huge world song – it's not going down any pop path. It wasn't written to be obvious," noted Ryan Tedder.

After writing the song, Ryan Tedder reached out to Tom Cruise to ask what he thought. The actor replied: "I think it's Diana."
