The course will examine through Harry Styles the cultural and political development of contemporary celebrities.
A new Harry Styles-themed class will be held at Texas State University next year.
The course entitled "Harry Styles and the Cult of Celebrity: Identity, the Internet and European Pop Culture", will be delivered by assistant professor of digital history Dr. Louis Dean Valencia.
The course, which is scheduled for the spring semester of 2023, will examine Harry Styles' career in music and acting.
The course description states: “This course focuses on British musician Harry Styles and European popular culture to understand the cultural and political development of contemporary celebrity as it relates to issues of gender and sexuality, race, class, nation and globalization , media, fashion, fan culture, internet culture and consumerism'.
The course will not invade the singer's private life, as noted by Dr. Valencia, but will explore the art and activism of Harry Styles, as well as the literature, philosophy and music that have influenced him throughout his career.
Credits for the course "Harry Styles and the Cult of Celebrity" will count towards a degree in World or European History, International or European Studies, Popular Culture Studies and Gender and Women's Studies.
Dr. Louis Dean Valencia has high ambitions for the course, stating that students will study the former One Direction star "in the way we study the work of Shakespeare, Toni Morrison, Virginia Woolf or any great artist".
Harry Styles isn't the only pop singer to have a university course dedicated to him.
Earlier this year, New York University's Clive Davis Institute hosted a course on Taylor Swift by journalist Brittany Spanos, and in the past university courses have been held on artists such as Beyoncé, Lady Gaga and the Beatles.
