"I've been the new girl all my life," said Dua Lipa, who spent her childhood in Kosovo and London.
Dua Lipa took a look back at her childhood.
During an appearance at the Hay Festival in Wales on Sunday, June 4, Dua Lipa spoke to the audience about her years living in the UK and Kosovo and her "perseverance" to follow her "dream of becoming pop star".
"From a young age, I dreamed of becoming a pop star, but it never seemed like something that was really possible," the 27-year-old singer said of her childhood split between Kosovo and London.
“I've been the new girl all my life. I understood the duality of my origins from an early age," he added.
Dua Lipa moved to Kosovo with her parents at the age of 11, but returned to the British capital at the age of 15 to finish high school.
"People have always asked where my name is from," continued the 27-year-old singer, who was born to Kosovar Albanian parents.
"I was very proud of it, but when I was younger I wished my name was, say, Hannah – something 'normal' and English," she admitted.
At the age of 17, Dua Lipa was "determined" to focus on her music career and started chasing her dream as soon as she finished school.
"I was quite determined. My father says it's too hard to say no to me!” she said.
"I was very persistent. I just started writing a lot, I worked with a producer," the pop star recalled.
"I was 17 years old. They offered me a publishing deal, but (producer) Felix told me to go to a lawyer, who told me: "Don't sign this deal!". Then they helped me into the studio,” he described.
However, not everything was so pleasant for Dua Lipa during her life.
Speaking to the audience at the annual literature festival, the singer revealed that when she was younger, she "was in a relationship with someone who had a very different idea of commitment than I did".
