While smiling through the cameras, Miley was silently enduring excruciating pain — and considering walking away from music altogether.
As millions tuned in to ring in the New Year with Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party, no one knew what was really happening behind Miley Cyrus’ radiant stage presence. Now, the “Flowers” singer is speaking out about the health emergency she experienced live on air.
In a candid interview on The Zane Lowe Show, Miley described the night as nothing short of traumatic. “I had a medical emergency during the New Year’s show,” she shared. “I had an ovarian cyst rupture. We didn’t know what was happening at the time.”
Pushing through the pain — and the spotlight
Despite intense and sudden pain, Miley continued hosting the show alongside her godmother, Dolly Parton, for NBC’s primetime special. “It was extremely excruciating. But I did the show anyway. It was really, really hard for me,” she said.
A breaking point — and thoughts of walking away
The incident left more than just physical scars. Miley admitted that the experience made her consider stepping away from the music industry entirely. But a conversation with legendary Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels, who co-executive produced the New Year’s Eve special, shifted her perspective.
“We had dinner, and he told me something I’ll never forget,” she recalled. “He said, ‘You’ve got six months to feel sorry for yourself. Then, you start rebuilding.’”
Coming back stronger with Something Beautiful
Miley has since healed — emotionally and physically — and is ready to share her next artistic chapter. Her new album, Something Beautiful, drops May 30, and from the sound of it, the project is as personal and raw as anything she’s ever done.
A cinematic companion film will also premiere in theaters for one night only this June, solidifying Something Beautiful as not just an album — but a statement of survival, strength, and reinvention.
