Ahead of her new album Something Beautiful, Miley reflects on healing, reinvention, and the unexpected power of holding a trophy in her hands.
As Miley Cyrus gears up to release her highly anticipated album Something Beautiful on May 30, she’s doing more than just talking about music. She’s opening up — candidly, bravely — about her personal evolution, the role sobriety has played in her growth, and how winning her first Grammy for “Flowers” became a deeply healing experience.
“Sobriety is my God”
In a soul-baring interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, Miley didn’t shy away from describing the pivotal role sobriety has taken in her life. “Sobriety is like my God. I need it. I live for it. It’s changed my whole life,” she said — not as a slogan, but as someone who’s lived through the storm and come out changed.
2020, the fall, and the flower that bloomed from it
She also reflected on a failed attempt to stay sober during the era of her 2020 album Plastic Hearts. “I needed to fall one more time,” she admitted. “Those weren’t my best moments or my best work. But they led me to write ‘Flowers’ — and that song became the key that unlocked my healing.”
Flowers, a self-love anthem that connected with millions, topped the Billboard Hot 100 for eight consecutive weeks, outlasting even her 2013 mega-hit Wrecking Ball. It ultimately earned her two Grammy Awards — Best Pop Solo Performance and Record of the Year.
“I needed to hold something real”
But for Miley, the Grammys weren’t just about accolades. They were a moment of self-validation. “I think somewhere deep down, I needed to hold something in my hands that felt like a real achievement,” she said. “It was a healing moment for me.”
The anxiety, the doubt — and the decision to show up
Ironically, she almost didn’t attend the ceremony at all. Stage anxiety, coupled with a reluctance to admit how badly she wanted to win, had her hesitating. “There was a part of me that was avoiding how much it really mattered,” she confessed. But when her name was called, everything shifted. “Now when you Google me, it says: ‘Miley Cyrus, Grammy Award-winning artist.’”
Something Beautiful is coming
On May 30, Miley will officially launch her next era with Something Beautiful, her ninth studio album. It’s already being teased as her most cinematic project yet — and fittingly, it will be accompanied by a film screening for one night only in theaters this June. The album includes previously released singles like “More to Lose,” “Prelude,” “End of the World,” and the title track, featuring collaborations with Brittany Howard and Naomi Campbell.
It’s not just a record — it’s a declaration: of growth, of honesty, of letting go.
