Kate Cassidy opens up about losing Liam Payne and coping with grief

Kate Cassidy, Liam Payne’s former partner, has spoken publicly for the first time following the tragic death of the One Direction star, opening her heart about grief and the journey of trying to cope with such a profound loss.

Liam Payne passed away in October 2024 at the age of 31, after falling from a third-floor hotel balcony in Buenos Aires. Initially, Argentine authorities filed charges of negligent homicide against two hotel staff members and Payne's friend, Rogelio Nores, but the case was later dropped.

The singer rose to worldwide fame as a member of One Direction, one of the most successful boy bands of all time.

"Liam Continues to Guide Me"

In an emotional interview with Lorraine Kelly on ITV, Cassidy spoke through tears about how the loss has deeply affected her. She admitted that some days it’s difficult to even get out of bed, but she feels Payne’s presence guiding her and giving her strength.

"I try to do the best I can," she shared. "I have my best days and my hardest days, but I'm grateful to have such a strong support system around me."

Her appearance was part of ITV’s March4March campaign, which focuses on raising awareness for mental health—an initiative that holds special significance for Cassidy.

Nala: A Companion Through Grief

Cassidy and Payne adopted a rescue dog named Nala together—a decision that has proven to be a lifeline during her healing journey. She revealed that she had returned early to Florida from their trip to Argentina to care for Nala, just days before Payne’s passing.

Walking with Nala has been a vital part of her daily routine, helping her cope with the overwhelming emotions.

"Sometimes I have a hard time getting out of bed in the morning," Cassidy confessed. "But having Nala by my side has helped me so much in my healing journey."

Lorraine Kelly echoed the importance of small, everyday activities in maintaining mental health—something Cassidy said she’s only recently come to appreciate.

"I've always loved walking," she said. "I considered myself an active person, but now there are days when I don't want to do anything. Still, I try to take one step at a time."

The Power of the Number 4

The March4March campaign holds a deeply personal meaning for Cassidy. She shared that the number four had become a symbolic connection between her and Payne—a sign of angelic support and guidance.

"I was drawn to the number four—it’s mine and Liam’s ‘angel number,’" she explained. "Every time I see it, I know he's right there with me."

Cassidy believes Payne’s presence led her to take part in the campaign to help others facing mental health struggles.

"I really feel like Liam guided me to this. It’s something he would have wanted me to do."

A Journey of Healing

While the pain of losing Liam Payne is still fresh, Kate Cassidy’s candid reflections offer a powerful reminder of resilience, the importance of community, and the small steps that help carry us through grief. As she continues her journey, her voice is becoming a beacon of hope for those navigating their own mental health battles.
