Kanye West: Faces copyright lawsuit over Alice Merton sample

Kanye West is facing a new copyright infringement lawsuit, adding to the controversy surrounding his recent anti-Semitic remarks.

Alice Merton's Legal Action

Singer Alice Merton has accused West of unlawfully sampling her song Blindside in his track Gun To My Head without permission.

According to the lawsuit, Merton’s voice can be heard singing the line:
“I sat down with a gun to my head,”—the opening lyric of Blindside—while melodic elements from her song are repeatedly used throughout West’s track.

Refusal to Cooperate Due to Anti-Semitism

Merton, who is German and a descendant of Holocaust survivors, expressed her outrage over the unauthorized use of her music. She stated that:

  • She was shocked to discover her song had been used.

  • She was not approached for permission until months after the song’s release, at which point she refused.

  • She wants no association with West due to his anti-Semitic and racist statements.

Song Release Controversy

The track Gun To My Head was not featured on West’s 2024 album Cultures 1, but was later included as a bonus track on Cultures 2.

As of now, Kanye West has not publicly addressed the lawsuit.
