"If you want to embarrass me, tie me to a chair and make me watch videos from the first two albums."
Jon Bon Jovi reveals which Bon Jovi video from the '80s he's most embarrassed about.
The 1980s were a different time, with music videos being one of the main promotional ways an artist could present their music to the public.
And as the music video era blossomed, there was a lot of experimentation and a lot of error when it came to successful music videos.
In an appearance on SiriusXM's "Andy Cohen Live," Jon Bon Jovi shared his thoughts on music videos during Bon Jovi's early days, the lesson he ultimately learned and the video he's most embarrassed about .
When asked by Andy Cohen if he has a favorite Bon Jovi video, the singer replied: "We were pretty smart until the third album."
“It took three albums to realize we're just promoting the live show with a video, so until 'You Give Love A Bad Name', 'Livin' On A Prayer', 'Wanted Dead Or Alive', those are really simple videos where they sing and then we realized that's all that mattered," he explained.
But after admitting that it took them three albums to figure out the secret of music videos, Jon Bon Jovi then talked about the band's first video clips and expressed a slight distaste for one of their early hits.
"When I think about that 'Runaway,' when we did the video... "For half a minute, I just learned how to play guitar and write a song. Do you want me to be a director? "What the hell do I know?", the singer recalled.
"I totally believed it and the idiotic record company with the idiotic director of the video saying 'Fahrenheit 451' (when the album title was '7800° Fahrenheit'), with his niece starring in the video... Christ...," he continued .
“Do you want to embarrass me? Tie me to a chair and make me watch videos from my first two albums," he commented characteristically.
"Horrible. The second album was awful, same thing, and after the third album we were like, “Wait a minute. Let's just film our performances” and boom. Everything has changed,” Jon Bon Jovi added.
Indeed, after two mediocre albums, Bon Jovi took the big leap to stardom with their third album, Slippery When Wet, which reached No. 1 in 1986.
Director Wayne Isham shot the music video for 'You Give Love a Bad Name', as well as 'Livin' On a Prayer' and 'Wanted Dead Or Alive', with each video focusing on footage from his tours complex.
