Harry Styles: 'As It Was' Was 2022's Biggest Single Worldwide

Harry Styles' 'As It Was' is officially the biggest hit on the planet for 2022.

IFPI, the organization that represents the recorded music industry worldwide, has announced that Harry Styles' 'As It Was' is the best-selling song worldwide for 2022.

The IFPI Global Single Award is presented to the artist with the year's highest-selling single worldwide across all digital formats – including subscription streaming, streaming through ad-supported platforms and individual song downloads.

'As It Was' is Harry Styles' first song to win the IFPI Global Single Award. However, this year marks ten years since his other triumphs with the band One Direction, which topped the first IFPI Global Recording Artist Chart, as well as the IFPI Global Album Chart in 2013.

Harry Styles has headlined an outstanding year for UK artists.

In the IFPI list of the best-selling singles worldwide in 2022, he is followed by Glass Animals with 'Heat Waves' at No. 2, Elton John and Dua Lipa with their collaboration 'Cold Heart (PNAU Remix)' at No. 4, while the Top 10 is completed by Ed Sheeran with 'Shivers' (No. 7) and 'Bad Habits' (No. 10), Adele with 'Easy On Me' (No. 13) and Dua Lipa with "Levitating" (ft. DaBaby) at No. 12;

It is worth noting that for the first time in the Top 20 four Spanish-language songs appear.

Bad Bunny holds two spots and appears at No. 9 with his collaboration with Chencho Corleone on "Me Porto Bonito" and No. 11 with his solo hit "Tití Me Preguntó".

Also Puerto Rican artist Farruko debuts on the IFPI Global Singles Chart with his single 'Pepas' ending at No. 18, while Colombian star Karol G also makes her maiden appearance on the annual chart with her Top 20 single 'Provenza'.

The IFPI's annual Global Singles Chart for 2022 also highlights classic songs that have come back to the fore and been loved by a new mainstream audience.

Kate Bush's 'Running Up That Hill' (A Deal With God) took No.16 on the chart after appearing on Netflix's hit series 'Stranger Things' in 2022, while 'Cold Heart (PNAU Remix)', a medley of Elton John's hits featuring Dua Lipa, reached No. 4 of the chart.

Frances Moore, chief executive of the IFPI, said: "Congratulations to Harry Styles, and his entire team, for winning the IFPI World Single of the Year award."

"Harry first received an award from the IFPI as a member of One Direction when we first launched the IFPI Global Recording Artist Chart 10 years ago, so we are honored to present him with an award this year for his amazing single "As It Was", which was the soundtrack of the year for so many music lovers around the world," he said.

"It's great to see such a diverse set of songs on the Global Singles Chart this year – some familiar songs from the previous year that have continued to climb in 2022, among many new songs and some covers of older songs," he continued.

"All of this shows that record companies are working hard to find new ways to ensure that music lovers around the world have access to such a wide range of music year after year," he stressed.
