Spotify sent Ed Sheeran a commemorative t-shirt for the milestone.
Ed Sheeran became the first artist to reach 100 million followers on Spotify.

The British singer-songwriter posted a video on Twitter in which he appears wearing a white T-shirt sent to him by the streaming service that reads in all caps: "Ask me about my 100 million Spotify followers."

In the video, which was shot in a stadium before a 'Mathematics Tours' gig, Sheeran comically approaches disinterested venue staff to get their attention with the T-shirt.

The only person in the video to react is singer Maisie Peters, the tour's support act, who replies: "Well done, Ed Sheeran!"

Ed Sheeran is now the most followed artist on the streaming service, ahead of Ariana Grande (81.64 million followers), Billie Eilish (66.18 million), Drake (65.40 million) and Justin Bieber (63.49 million).

The 31-year-old pop star was also the first artist to reach 50 million followers on Spotify in March 2020 and is the most popular artist on the platform, averaging 81.20 million monthly listeners.

Last month, it was announced by UK rights management organization Phonographic Performance Limited (PPL) that Ed Sheeran was the most streamed artist of 2021 in the UK and that the most streamed single was also 'Bad Habits' .

Ed Sheeran is the only artist in history to have won the titles of most streamed artist and most streamed single in the UK twice together.

In 2017, he achieved the same feat with the hit 'Shape Of You' and his album '÷' (Divide)

Ed Sheeran was the UK's most streamed artist for four years, however, in 2020, Dua Lipa broke his streak by winning that year's title.
