Ed Sheeran has revealed that his upcoming album, Play, will embrace a more Eurasian musical influence, particularly drawing inspiration from Persian melodies and rhythms.
The New Single “Azizam” & Persian Influences
Sheeran is set to release Azizam next month as the first single from Play.
The track was produced in collaboration with Ilya Salmanzadeh, known for his work with Ariana Grande, Ellie Goulding, and Sam Smith.
Inspired by Ilya’s expertise, Sheeran explored Persian musical traditions, blending them into his signature style.
“I wrote ‘Azizam’ after Ilya suggested experimenting with Persian-inspired sounds. I love discovering new music and cultures while traveling—it felt like stepping into an exciting, uncharted world.”
“What struck me was how Persian rhythms, scales, and instruments felt both different and yet oddly similar to the Irish traditional music I grew up with. It was a reminder that music truly unites us all.”
What Happened to Sheeran’s Death Metal Project?
Previously, Sheeran had teased fans with plans for a death metal album. However, this project has yet to materialize.
Despite this, Sheeran has collaborated with extreme metal band Cradle of Filth, and rumors suggest that one of their tracks may feature on an upcoming album.
With Play, Ed Sheeran proves once again that he’s unafraid to experiment with new sounds, pushing beyond Western music to embrace global influences.
