The legendary musician, known as *The Boss*, revealed that he can go for extended periods without feeling the urge to write. In fact, he hasn't written any new material since 2022. At the Los Angeles premiere of his documentary *Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band*, he told *Entertainment Weekly*, “Songs don’t come that often. I’ve gone two years without writing anything.”
In contrast, his 2020 album *Letter to You* was written in just two weeks and recorded in a matter of days. The album was deeply influenced by the death of his lifelong friend and bandmate George Theiss, who passed away in 2018 from cancer at 68. Springsteen explained, “I came back from George’s, and he filled me with something. I think all of *Letter to You* was written in about two weeks and recorded in four days.”
Despite his writing lull, the *Born in the U.S.A.* icon has no intention of slowing down. In the trailer for his new documentary, Springsteen reflects on his career, stating that playing live has been "a deep and lasting part of who I am" since he was 16, and he plans to continue performing "until the wheels fall off."
This sentiment echoes comments he made earlier in 2023, where he assured fans he had no plans for a farewell tour, despite battling some health issues. During a Philadelphia concert, he declared, “We’ve been around 50 f****** years, and we ain’t quitting! We ain’t doing no farewell tour bull****! No farewell tour for the E Street Band!”
Springsteen remains energized by performing live, famously delivering marathon performances lasting over four hours. He added, "Farewell to what? Thousands of people screaming your name. That’s all it takes. I ain’t going anywhere."
