Bono's father had an extramarital affair and had a child with the singer's mother's sister.
Bono explains how he felt when he found out one of his cousins was actually his half-brother.
The 62-year-old U2 singer revealed earlier this year that his father Bob had an affair in the 1960s with a "beautiful woman" and has now admitted that she was his aunt Barbara and that their child is a stock analyst called Scott Rankin.
"The truth is, with Scott, we felt like brothers long before we knew we were brothers. I love Scott and his mother, Barbara," Bono told the Irish Times.
"I must have known something was wrong and I must have held my father responsible for somehow making my mother unhappy in the way that children just understand things," she continued.
Bono's mother, Iris Hewson, died in 1974 when Bono was 14 years old and had never learned of her husband Bob's illicit affair.
His aunt Barbara was married to Jack Rankin, Iris' brother, who died two years ago.
Bono learned of his father's extramarital affair in 2000, a year before he died of cancer, and revealed the existence of his half-brother on the BBC's 'Desert Island Discs' radio show in June.
Scott Rankin, aged in his 50s, is a banking expert at Ireland's Treasury and told the Irish Daily Mail that he and Bono - born Paul Hewson - felt a strong bond "long before they knew they were brothers".
"I am blessed to have been welcomed with open arms into the Hewson family," he said.
"Not all of these stories turn out the way mine did, and I was lucky to find that I had two fathers who took an active part in my upbringing," he stressed.
“Our extended family has known for some time and we agreed that there was no point in keeping it a secret any longer. We have nothing but love for our parents and are grateful to have the support of our families to share this story,” Bono's half-brother said.
