Shakira is asking for the privacy of her sons with Gerard Piqué after a 'difficult year'.
As she and her sons Milan, 10, and Sasha, 8, move from Barcelona to Miami following her split from Gerard Piqué, the 46-year-old singer released a statement asking the public to give her family some space in her new chapter.
"During this time of change in my life as a public figure, it is understandable that there is an ongoing curiosity from the press about me and my family," Shakira wrote on Twitter.
"However, my children, Milan and Sasha, have had a very difficult year, enduring constant harassment and relentless pursuit by the paparazzi and various media in Barcelona," he noted.
Shakira also set some conditions that she hopes will allow her children to lead a normal life.
"Now that they are starting a new life, I am begging the media on behalf of my children to respect their right to privacy," she continued.
"I implore you to refrain from following them in and out of their school, waiting for them at the door of our house, or following them in their extracurricular and recreational activities, as the media did in Barcelona in order to take pictures or increase their numbers", he added.
Speaking about her boys, Shakira noted that her two sons just want to be able to feel "safe and calm" in public and at school.
"I think that the journalists and photographers here will be attentive to the situation and what Milan and Sasha are going through and that they will be able to behave in the most humane way possible towards them, bearing in mind that it is about the physical and emotional health and safety of two minors just 8 and 10 years old", he emphasized.
Concluding her message, Shakira told the media that she is not addressing them as a singer, but as "a mother who wishes to protect and care for the psychological and emotional well-being of my children so that they can live a happy and healthy life, as all children deserve".
Shakira captioned her tweet: “Dear friends, journalists and media…”
Shakira and Gerard Piqué announced their separation after 11 years of dating in June 2022.
Several months later, in November, a source confirmed to E! News that the couple have reached a child custody agreement, revealing that Shakira plans to move with her children to Miami to be closer to her family.
