Legendary 54-year-old hip-hop and soul artist Mary J. Blige was invited by 35-year-old pop superstar Taylor Swift to perform together during her 1989 World Tour in Los Angeles in 2015. The two artists shared the stage for live renditions of Family Affair and Doubt.
Speaking to People, Mary J. Blige recalled how surreal it was to receive the call from Taylor:
"To give you an idea of how it happened—Taylor called me. She said, ‘I want you to join me on tour.’ I was in shock. I thought, ‘Taylor Swift likes Mary J. Blige’s music?
Blige believes that her connection with Swift comes from their shared ability to express deep emotions through their music.
"When we met for our performance, I realized she’s an incredibly down-to-earth and sweet person. That’s exactly what brought us together."
"The way she expresses herself through her songs, her need to speak about what she’s going through—that’s what we have in common because I do the same thing."
In a 2024 interview with the same outlet, Blige admitted that her fans have played a crucial role in helping her maintain her emotional balance.
"I’ve been through a lot in my life, but hearing my fans’ stories makes me realize there are people who have faced even greater struggles. Sometimes, I catch myself thinking, ‘Wow, I’m just complaining.’"
Her honesty and ability to turn hardships into music are what make her so deeply connected to both her fans and fellow artists like Taylor Swift.
