Lil Nas X would not be coming out without the success of "Old Town Road"

Lil Nas X talks about his decision to reveal his sexual orientation amid the success of his song "Old Town Road" in 2019.

The 22-year-old artist was interviewed in the new issue of "XXL" for the fall of 2021 and commented on the importance of representing the LOATKI community in the hip-hop music scene and his decision to speak openly about his sexuality.

"I do not think I would have ever revealed it," he said of his move as "Old Town Road" broke the record for the most weeks spent at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

"I honestly felt it was my job. Especially if I wanted to move forward. And with what I did, because authenticity is something very real, I feel like people can see it through it. "This is a part of me," he continued.

Lil Nas X was also worried about what people would think of him.

"My fear was that people would judge me for how I would behave after the revelation," he admitted.

I used to like comments where people said, "I like it because it's not so provocative." And then I realized what that was. It's about the same thing as saying "I have a black friend" and that sits in everything that has to do with the history and culture of blacks. "I am not this man," he explained.

Lil Nas X - Met Gala 2021

Lil Nas X has reopened the dialogue about the existence of gay Black men in hip-hop music.

He is also one of the biggest new stars of pop culture and even if we do not deal with him for a long time, we will deal with the impact of his existence in the field of rap for the next decades, claims "XXL".

However, he does not seem willing to stop here, as he believes that "there is a greater purpose".

"I am very - and I have not always been, I was an atheist at one point - but I have become a very spiritual person in terms of the Universe, how everything works," he confessed.

"And I believe that the Universe - if God, if my angels or whatever - put me in the position of having the greatest song in the world, why would they want me to stop there? Obviously there is a bigger purpose. Obviously there is something bigger that needs to be revealed. "Of course, I got a lot of comments saying I was a one-hit wonder," he continued.

"Even today I get such comments. I get a lot of comments from people who devalue me or say, “Okay, this song was successful just because of that. That song was a success just for that. " "And I say, 'OK, let me show you,'" he said.

"Let me show you and I will show myself. I will build my heritage before your eyes. So if you ever feel the need to underestimate someone else, just know that you should probably wait, "said Lil Nas X.
