Harry Styles: From One Direction to James Bond? The Rumors Around the Next 007

Harry Styles has reportedly held discussions about playing James Bond as the search for Daniel Craig’s successor continues. The singer and actor is the latest name connected to the role, alongside Robert Pattinson, Nicholas Hoult, Callum Turner, Josh O’Connor and Jack Lowden. No casting decision has been officially announced, with Denis Villeneuve set to direct the next film and Steven Knight writing the screenplay.

Harry Styles has reportedly entered the conversation surrounding the next James Bond, with new reports claiming that he has discussed the possibility of taking over the role of 007. There is no official confirmation that Styles has auditioned, received an offer or progressed to a formal stage of the casting process, but his name is now part of an increasingly crowded field.

The former One Direction member has gradually built an acting career alongside his music. His first major film role came in Christopher Nolan’s 2017 war drama “Dunkirk,” where he played British soldier Alex as part of an ensemble cast.

He later appeared in Marvel’s “Eternals” as Eros in a post-credits scene before taking more substantial roles in 2022. Styles starred opposite Florence Pugh in Olivia Wilde’s psychological drama “Don’t Worry Darling” and played a closeted police officer in “My Policeman,” alongside Emma Corrin and David Dawson.

Those credits give Styles more screen experience than his pop career might initially suggest, although becoming James Bond would represent a very different level of responsibility. The role would place him at the center of one of cinema’s longest-running franchises and make him the first actor to lead the series under its new creative structure at Amazon MGM Studios.

Styles is not the only high-profile name being discussed. Robert Pattinson and Nicholas Hoult have reportedly screen-tested for the role, placing them at a more clearly defined stage of the casting conversation than Styles, whose involvement has so far only been described as discussions.

Pattinson already has extensive franchise experience through “The Batman,” as well as earlier appearances in the “Twilight” films. He has also worked with Denis Villeneuve on the forthcoming “Dune: Part Three,” giving him an existing professional connection with the director of the next Bond film.

Hoult currently plays Lex Luthor in DC’s “Superman” films and previously appeared as Hank McCoy, better known as Beast, across several “X-Men” movies. His upcoming work also includes Amazon MGM Studios’ “How to Rob a Bank.”

Other names connected to the search include Callum Turner, Josh O’Connor and Jack Lowden. Theo James has also been mentioned as someone who may remain under consideration. No official shortlist has been released, making it important to separate reported discussions and screen tests from an actual casting decision.

Turner has already received public support from former Bond actor Pierce Brosnan, who has spoken positively about him as a possible successor to Daniel Craig. Gary Oldman, meanwhile, has backed his “Slow Horses” co-star Lowden.

Oldman also recently caused speculation by suggesting that the next Bond may already have been selected, although there has been no official announcement confirming that claim. For now, the identity of the new 007 remains unresolved.

Daniel Craig ended his time as Bond with “No Time to Die” in 2021. His run began with “Casino Royale” in 2006 and ultimately covered five films, leaving the franchise without a new leading actor for several years.

The next film will also mark a major change behind the camera. Denis Villeneuve was chosen to direct, while “Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight is writing the screenplay. Amy Pascal and David Heyman are producing the film as Amazon MGM Studios moves ahead with the first Bond project under its expanded creative control of the franchise.

That development has made the casting process particularly closely watched. Whoever becomes the next Bond will not simply replace Craig but will lead the series into a new production era.

Styles would certainly bring an unusually large existing audience to the role. His years with One Direction and subsequent solo career have made him one of the most recognizable British performers of his generation, while his acting work has shown that he intends to maintain a presence in film rather than treating it as a one-off diversion.

Still, there is a significant difference between being discussed and being chosen. The reports do not establish that Harry Styles has screen-tested, entered final negotiations or received an offer to play James Bond.

For now, his name joins a list that includes established actors with very different screen careers. Pattinson, Hoult, Turner, O’Connor, Lowden and James have all been linked to the search at different levels, while Amazon MGM Studios has yet to reveal who will become the next 007.

Until that announcement arrives, the clearest new development is simply that Harry Styles has reportedly been part of the conversation. Whether those discussions move any further remains unknown.
