Documentary on Netflix about the women of hip-hop

The documentary will feature female hip-hop pioneers such as Queen Latifah, Saweetie, Tierra Whack and many more.

A new Netflix documentary series will highlight the contributions and achievements of the women who shaped hip-hop.

"Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop" will premiere on August 9.

Over the course of the documentary's four episodes, viewers will meet the women who paved the way for new generations of female hip-hop artists.

According to Netflix, recognizing trailblazers like Sha-Rock and Roxanne Shante, or hearing real talk from contemporary superstars like Saweetie and Coi Leray, "Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop" places history of the music that changed the world within the wider social, racial and political landscape of the time and, above all, through a female perspective.

"Ladies First" also features interviews with influential rappers Queen Latifah, Rah Digga and MC Lyte, who recall their experiences during the rise of hip-hop.

A long list of women dominating the charts today, including Latto and Tierra Whack, are flanked by journalists, stylists and other big names in the industry, who paint a picture of what's changed in hip-hop over all these decades and what progress still needs to be made.

The first trailer for Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop, which you can watch above, features Queen Latifah.

The trailer gives viewers a quick look back at the evolution of hip-hop and how it embraced female artists, while also paying tribute to the artists who made this era of female chart dominance possible.

"We've been through a lot. We've bounced back, and we always will bounce back," says Queen Latifah.

On December 3, Queen Latifah will be among the iconic artists honored as part of the Kennedy Center Honors, including singer Dionne Warwick, comedian Billy Crystal, Bee Gees icon Barry Gibb and operatic soprano Renée Fleming.
