“Building the Band” launches with emotional tribute to Liam Payne

Netflix confirms: The artist’s family approved the final cut

Netflix’s brand-new music reality series Building the Band is set to hit screens this summer, and it carries with it a deeply emotional layer: the late Liam Payne appears as a judge, with his family having personally approved the inclusion of his scenes.

A unique concept and a bittersweet debut

Premiering July 9, the show will kick off with its first four episodes, followed by three more on July 16, and concluding on July 23. The format introduces a fresh spin on the typical talent show: young singers attempt to build musical chemistry by performing together in isolated booths—without ever seeing one another—reminiscent of Love Is Blind. Once bands are formed, contestants finally meet face to face and take on the challenge of performing as a cohesive unit.

Liam Payne’s final on-screen appearance, with his family’s blessing

Liam’s role on the show was filmed in July 2024, just months before his untimely passing in October. Following the tragedy, production was briefly halted, but Netflix ultimately confirmed that his family reviewed the footage and fully supported its release:
“Liam Payne’s family viewed the series and gave their approval for his inclusion,” read the official statement.

Behind the scenes, a presence remembered warmly

Director Simon Hay described Liam as “humble, kind, and effortlessly professional” on set. One crew member recalled his generosity and deep investment in the young artists’ journeys:
“He genuinely wanted to help them. That’s what made the news of his passing hit even harder—he won’t get to see them flourish.”

Host AJ McLean (of Backstreet Boys fame) shared his own reflection:
“We clicked instantly, not just as musicians, but as people. We had this boy-band banter going on—he had that dry, quick British humor that made you laugh without even trying.”

This series is more than a music competition—it’s a heartfelt celebration of artistic growth, connection, and the powerful legacy of someone who believed in lifting others up, right until the very end.
